Lester A. Booker Jr. joined the General Motors Global Communications organization in June 2016. He is responsible for managing and spearheading a wide variety of long-term strategic communications initiatives designed to increase GM’s reputation as a key stakeholder and leader in the automotive industry; trailblazing the future of personal mobility through diversity communications, corporate giving communications and communications operations.
In this role, he also serves as a subject matter expert; providing IHS Markit data insights to brand communications teams to engage diverse audiences and the facilitation of flawless product launches and brand experiences. Booker also oversees the automaker’s diversity communications strategy and 50-year partnership with the Black Press of America.
Booker joined the GM family in 2014. Beginning as an agency partner, he managed Buick Marketing partnerships and experiences including the negotiation and management of the brand’s partnership with the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Prior to GM, Booker worked for the Ford Motor Company Fund via Campbell Marketing and Communications. He also held numerous positions with the NBA Detroit Pistons and WNBA Detroit Shock.
In January 2020, the Lester Booker Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund for Diversity and Inclusion was established at Central Michigan University. This annual $2,500 scholarship is awarded to one undergraduate student who demonstrates an active commitment to the participation of underrepresented communities in educational pursuits.
Booker has been recognized for his career accomplishments including the Michigan Chronicle 40 Under 40 Award, CMU 10 Within 10 Recognition and Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports & Entertainment Employee of the Year.
A Detroit native, Booker holds a Master of Science in Administration degree, with a sport concentration and a Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in broadcast and cinematic arts both from CMU.
Booker serves on the Board of Directors of the CMU Alumni Association, Girls of Color Can (GC2) STEM Initiative and Loyal High School Marketing Committee. Additionally, he’s a member of the Legal Services Corporation’s recently established Emerging Leaders Council.
